The island nation of Singapore doesn't exactly spring to mind when it comes to menswear, with many of its inhabitants preferring shorts and flipflops. But if you dig deeper you will find a number of establishments catering to the discerning gentleman. These are usually off the beaten path, but are worth paying a visit if you're looking for something unique to add to your wardrobe.

1. Fiftyfive
If you only have time to visit one shop in Singapore it has to be Fiftyfive. It's a multi-label boutique that has brought together three different entities, each with their own speciality: Cumulus, for their curated range of carry goods; Ed Et Al, for their handcrafted shoes; and Kevin Seah, for his ready-to-wear and bespoke clothing. If you don't have time to have a shirt made you can get a Simonnot-Godard pocket square or one of Kevin Seah's heavy knit ties.

2. Tuckshop and Sundry Supplies
Tuckshop and Sundry Supplies is the outpost for all things workwear-though, not the kind that you wear to the office. They specialize in carrying selvedge jeans and a wide array of shoes and boots from Red Wing and Oak Street Bootmakers. Those looking for their first pair of selvedge jeans or a pair of boots would be wise to visit this store. Don't forget to also check out their in-house leather goods brand Obbi Good Label, which is entirely handmade just above the shop.

3. SWAGGER
SWAGGER is a boutique located in Ann Siang Hill that carries the finer things in life. They have a well-curated selection of clothing and bags from all over the world. But what truly stands out are their cufflinks, made from vintage watch movements with their original rubies. The owner, Stan Lee (not the famous comics creator, alas), is also fond of vintage collectibles, and his eclectic collection is up for sale here. They are pricey but their rarity and beauty recalls a bygone era and would fit in perfectly in the recent film adaptation of The Great Gatsby.

4. Cumulus
Looking for a nice bag? Cumulus probably has what you're looking for. It has anything and everything you'd want to carry your stuff in. It carries the largest selection of Jack Spade bags in this part of the world, as well as other bag labels from Sweden, South Korea, Colombia, and France. They also have a great selection of wallets from Bellroy and J. Press that's also worth checking out. It's a bit crowded inside because it's filled to the brim but rest assured you're likely to step out with either a bag or a wallet in hand.

5. PACT
PACT is a combination of three different entities: Kilo, which is a restaurant and bar; K.I.N, for clothing; and PACT+LIM, which is a hair salon. They have their very own clothing label called Sifr which epitomizes Singapore's laidback style. Sifr's line of comfortable tees, polo shirts, blazers, and trousers made from pima cotton will make you look put together yet relaxed. Aside from their house brand they also carry accessories and grooming products.
