There is a copious amount of challenging activities a man may encounter in his lifetime. But none of these are as daunting as trying to catch the attention (and eventual affection) of a woman.

Here are six tips from real guys who have been there, done that, and lived to tell the tale.

"Remember the small details, especially things she says when you're engaged in a conversation. A girl wouldn't expect you to notice them, much more remember. There was this one girl who mentioned in passing how her house burned down a few years ago. Come Christmas season, I gave her a card with a pop-up house that said, 'This won't replace the house you lost but I guess this will do for now.' She was very surprised by the effort and that I remembered."

Angelo, 30, retail manager

"You have to smell good. Unfortunately, smelling bad is an occupational hazard in my line of work - I usually smell like garlic and smoke after my shift. One time, I was invited to a late night party by my friends. Normally I would have gone back to my condo to freshen up but I had to cover for someone on leave that day so I didn't have time to do that. Good thing I had my go-to body spray in the car which was definitely a life saver. I met a lot of women that night and I can guarantee that it wouldn't have happened if I was the guy who smelled like garlic."

Greg, 27, chef

"My tried and tested way to get a woman's attention is to tease her. You have to be careful not to overdo it and seem immature. Do it just enough to make your wit and charm shine through. If done tastefully enough, it's a really great way to get a girl to open up about anything or at the very least, start talking. I remember this time when I teased a foreign girl I just met about her home country. She went on and on about how it wasn't that bad, which led to a lengthy conversation that lasted until the break of dawn."

Lito, 33, editor

"A good sense of humor will never fail to get any woman's attention. I remember the day I mustered enough courage to talk to the hot girl in my office building. I thought I would be able to make her laugh with my arsenal of jokes. Yes, I made her laugh. But it was, as how she now calls it, at my 'young Michael Jackson baby voice.' The takeaway here is you have to make a woman laugh by any means possible. In my case, it was also about being able to laugh at myself."

Rakim, 33, marketing director

"If a girl recently had her haircut or tried a new hair color, say something nice. Guys don't usually notice, let alone say something about a girl's hair so this is something that will definitely get their attention. I used to compliment my college crush about the little things I found adorable about her. She's now my wife."

Danny, 28, lawyer

"Food is something that will certainly get any woman's attention. When I was still courting my girlfriend, I was really eager to get her attention in any way possible. I found out that food was one the things that consistently did the trick. During one of our dates, she mentioned something about me having good taste in food. That gave me the idea of preparing food for her so I invited her to my house and cooked for her. That sealed the deal for us."

Lemuel, 33, project manager
